The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) is one of the premiers container handling ports in India. Since its inception on May 26, 1989, JNPA has transformed from a bulk-cargo terminal to become the premier container port in the country. Currently JNPA operates five container terminals – NSFT, NSICT, NSIGT, BMCT and APMT. JNPA has risen to become one of the most advanced and sought-after ports in the region, handling significant volumes of cargo and serving as a crucial gateway for international trade.
The rise of Jawaharlal Nehru Port, one of the two youngest major ports, has been spectacular. It handles more than half of India’s container volumes shipped by sea. The world’s top three container terminal operators – PSA International, DP World, and APM Terminals – run facilities at the port. This port is located at Nhava Sheva near Mumbai was originally designed to decongest the decades-old Mumbai port nearby and sign in the heart of India’s financial capital.

To commemorate the significant milestone, JNPA organized a Foundation Day event, in Mumbai on May 25, 2023, where in Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, the Hon’ble Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, was the chief guest. The top performers amongst the Trade and JNPA employees were felicitated by Hon’ble Minister Shri Sonowal Ji, in the presence of Shri Sanjay Sethi, IAS, Chairman, JNPA, Shri Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Dy. Chairman, JNPA, Ministry officials, stakeholders across the marine sector, JNPA officials, and other imminent dignitaries were present at the occasion. Hon’ble Union Minister read The World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index (LPI) Report, 2023 and said that the port had a record-high cargo volume of 6.05 Million TEUs in the year that ended in March 2023. He also said that Jawaharlal Nehru Port turns around box ships in a mere 22 hours or just 0.9 days is a testament to the port.
Jawaharlal Nehru Port is a feather in the cap of the Union government as it seeks to build world-class ports to support its ambitious plans to become a $5 trillion economy.
